We are affiliated with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod – Canada or more often referred to by an acronym, the WELS or WELS-Canada.
Like most Christian groups, names have a lot to do with history. Our church body started in Wisconsin in 1850. Even though we still carry the name “Wisconsin” our mother church body has congregations in all 50 US states and in four Canadian provinces and through missions in countries all over the world.
We are little “e” evangelical, not capital “E” Evangelical. Contrary to popular belief, the word “evangelical” simply means “to tell the good news of Jesus.” In that sense, our church body stresses that we exist to tell people about Jesus. That’s it. Simple.
Similar to the name “Wisconsin”, the term “Lutheran” came when those who were expelled from the Roman Catholic Church and named after their most famous teacher, Martin Luther. He was a German pastor in the 1500s who led a straying church back to God’s Word and the work of Jesus. What Martin Luther did to reform the Christian church was to insist that beliefs and practice must be founded upon the Word of God. Though not all Lutherans still hold this principle, we treasure this same principle to this very day. It keeps us focused on our Saviour, Jesus and on serving him and sharing his love with people from every nation.
Being a Christian on your own is a difficult thing to do. The same goes for congregations. We need to walk together with other Christians for mutual encouragement, for training, and to reach more people with the good news of Jesus than we can do on our own. A synod is a group of Christian congregations and individual Christians who walk together to accomplish more work than any can do alone. We are proud to belong to such a church body with strong commitments to remaining true to God’s Word, to training future generations of Christians to do the same, and to sharing this good news with the world. Along with our sister congregations in Canada, Saviour of the Nations is working to develop new ministry and reach out to people all across our great country. We are working everyday to develop a strong Canadian church in WELS, committed to the truth of God’s Word and sharing the Gospel with Canadians coast to coast to coast.
