Opening Hymn – 195 Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty
M: The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ and the love of God and the fellowship of the Holy Spirit be with you.
C: And also with you.
M: In the year King Uzziah died, Isaiah saw a vision of the Lord of glory in his heavenly temple with angels before his glorious throne calling:
C: “Holy, holy, holy, is the LORD Almighty; the whole earth is full of his glory.”
M: Isaiah says that at the sound of their voices the doorposts and thresholds shook and the temple was filled with smoke. And he cried, “Woe to me! I am ruined! For I am a man of unclean lips, and I live among a people of unclean lips, and my eyes have seen the King, the LORD Almighty.” Before the LORD Almighty our sin stands exposed. Let us also cry out for his mercy confessing our sins.
C: Holy and merciful Father, I confess that I am by nature sinful, and that I have disobeyed you in my thoughts, words, and actions. I have done what is evil and failed to do what is good. For this I deserve your punishment both now and in eternity. But I am truly sorry for my sins, and trusting in my Saviour Jesus Christ, I pray: Lord, have mercy on me a sinner.
M: God, our heavenly Father, has been merciful to us and has given his only Son to be the atoning sacrifice for our sins. As the angel flew to Isaiah and touched his lips with a coal from the Lord’s altar and said, “See, this has touched your lips; your guilt is taken away and your sin atoned for.” Therefore, as a called servant of Christ and by his authority, I forgive you all your sins in the name of the triune God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit.
